Hamas Proposes Release of American Hostage; Israel Calls it 'Psychological Warfare'

The extremist group Hamas claims it is ready to release an Israeli-American hostage if Israel agrees to begin negotiations for a second phase of the ceasefire. However, the Israeli government has dismissed this proposal as 'psychological warfare.' The proposal from Hamas, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the EU, was made on Friday, March 24, following the receipt of a plan from international mediators regarding the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire negotiations. This proposal includes the release of Idan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli soldier originally from New Jersey, and the bodies of four other Israelis held by the group. On the other hand, Benjamin Netanyahu's office referred to Hamas's proposal as 'trickery and psychological warfare.' This entity noted the Prime Minister's meeting tomorrow night with cabinet members regarding the status of hostages and decision-making on next steps, stating, 'While Israel has agreed to Steve Witkoff's proposal, Hamas remains steadfast in its position and has not budged even a millimeter.' Israel has expressed a desire to extend the first phase of the temporary ceasefire, an idea that has the support of U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff. However, Hamas insists that it will only resume the release of the remaining hostages if the second phase of the ceasefire begins. Last week, Witkoff announced at the White House that the release of Idan Alexander is one of the 'top priorities.' Adam Bohler, an American negotiator, had called for the release of this 21-year-old soldier during a rare meeting with Hamas leaders. Since the end of the first phase of the ceasefire on March 12, Israel has refused to initiate discussions about the second phase of the ceasefire, which was supposed to include talks about a definitive end to the war. The complete cessation of hostilities in Gaza has been Hamas's main demand. For two weeks, following the end of the first phase of the ceasefire, Israel has completely besieged Gaza, preventing food and medical supplies from entering the strip. Electricity in this densely populated area has also been cut off. Meanwhile, Palestinian aid workers reported on Friday, citing the fragility of the ceasefire, that four Palestinians were killed due to an Israeli airstrike in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City. According to Palestinian media, these four individuals were gathering firewood for cooking in the absence of electricity and gas. The Israeli army, however, claims that in this attack, several militants intending to bomb near Israeli forces were targeted. The United States, Qatar, and Egypt have long been working to reduce the differences between Hamas and Israel to create conditions for resuming negotiations aimed at freeing the remaining Israeli hostages and lifting the blockade on the Gaza Strip. In another development on Thursday, March 23, hundreds of Jewish protesters gathered in support of Palestinians and Palestinian student activist Mahmoud Khalil, who has been detained, in front of Trump Tower in New York and entered the building. This group managed to surprise the police and security forces of the building, chanting 'Fight the Nazis, not the students,' a slogan referencing Donald Trump's decision to detain and expel foreign students supporting Palestinians. The protesters, who wore matching t-shirts with the slogan 'Jews want to stop arming Israel,' appeared to be members of a group called 'Jewish Voice for Peace' and spent over an hour in this Manhattan tower. The main office of Donald Trump's family business is located in this tower, and the U.S. President also has a residential unit there. New York police reported the arrest of 98 protesters on charges including illegal entry into private property.
