Marjane Satrapi Wins the Princess of Asturias Award in Spain

This year's Princess of Asturias Award in the field of Communication and Humanities is awarded to Marjane Satrapi, the renowned Iranian-French artist. Ms. Satrapi, a writer and director known for her graphic novel 'Persepolis', will receive this prestigious award in Spain in October. The jury awarded this prize due to Marjane Satrapi's 'essential' role in 'defending human rights and freedoms'. They stated: 'Marjane Satrapi is a symbol of women's civic commitment. Thanks to her courage and artistic productions, she is considered one of the most influential figures in the dialogue between cultures and generations.' Ms. Satrapi, born in Iran, recounts her observations from her teenage years in 'Persepolis', particularly the restrictions imposed on women and the hardships during the Iran-Iraq War. This work narrates the story of a young girl after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran and addresses her experiences regarding the establishment of an Islamic government, religious restrictions, war, and immigration. Marjane Satrapi's family sent her to a school in Vienna at the age of 14 to prevent her from being arrested and harassed for defying the laws of the Islamic Republic. The artist later returned to Iran but eventually moved to France, where she pursued her professional activities in painting, writing, and directing. After the success of the graphic novel 'Persepolis', she also created an animated film based on it, which received significant acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, won awards, and was nominated for an Oscar. On the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death, Satrapi published a graphic novel titled 'Woman, Life, Freedom' in collaboration with several Iranian and non-Iranian researchers and illustrators, which also received positive reactions. This graphic novel refers to the history of women's struggles in Iran and depicts the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' movement, women's protests, and the violent suppression of protesters by the Islamic Republic. The $54,000 Princess of Asturias Award is one of the recognized awards in Europe, given in eight different categories to individuals or organizations that have made valuable contributions to humanity. The aim of these awards is to promote scientific, cultural, and human values in the world. Previous winners in the field of Communication and Humanities include American feminist Gloria Steinem, Italian novelist Umberto Eco, and Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
