Republican Members of the House Homeland Security Committee Call for Stronger Action Against the Islamic Republic

On Tuesday, October 10, Republican members of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee condemned the 'terrorist' attacks by Hamas against Israel and urged the Biden administration to take stronger actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran. In a letter to the U.S. President, they described Hamas's attacks on Israel as 'horrific and cowardly,' resulting in 'dozens killed and hundreds injured,' and linked these attacks to recent actions by the Biden administration, including the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds as part of a prisoner exchange. The committee members wrote in their letter: 'These actions demonstrate weakness towards Iran and send a message to terrorists that they can continue their actions freely without any consequences.' They further called on the Biden administration to immediately reassess its actions regarding Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups and to provide any necessary assistance to Israel in responding to these terrorists. The Biden administration has repeatedly denied claims that the released $6 billion could be used by Iran for nefarious purposes, stating that the funds would be spent very limitedly and under supervision. The White House National Security Advisor, in a press conference on Tuesday, responded to a question about the potential role of the Islamic Republic in Hamas's attacks on Israel, saying: 'The United States is reviewing information to see if Iran had prior knowledge of this attack or assisted in its planning or execution.' He added: 'While the Islamic Republic broadly supports Hamas and is, in a broad sense, complicit with them, providing financial assistance for Hamas's military wing and training them, there is still no evidence that Tehran was specifically involved in Hamas's recent attack on Israel.' Michael McCaul expressed concerns to Voice of America that China and Russia might also be involved in Hamas's attack like Iran.
