The U.S. Department of Defense Integrates AI Chatbot Grok into the Pentagon Network

Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, announced that the AI chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk, will be used alongside Google's AI platform within the Pentagon network to assist American military personnel. Hegseth made the announcement on Monday, January 22, at Elon Musk's SpaceX facility in South Texas. He noted that Grok will be part of a larger effort to integrate the Department of Defense's data with evolving AI technology. Hegseth stated, 'We will soon have the world's leading AI models across all unclassified and classified networks throughout our department.' He mentioned that the integration of Grok will occur this month and that 'all relevant data' will be made available from U.S. Army IT systems for 'AI exploitation,' as well as importing data from information databases into AI systems. Emphasizing the importance of accelerating technological innovations in the military, he said, 'We need innovation to come from anywhere and evolve rapidly and purposefully.' Hegseth noted that the Pentagon has 'two decades of proven operational data from military and intelligence operations.' He stated, 'AI is only as good as the data it receives, and we want to ensure that [this data] exists.' He also mentioned that military AI systems should operate 'without ideological constraints that limit legitimate military applications.' He emphasized that 'Pentagon AI will not be woke.' Musk developed and presented Grok as an alternative to what he calls 'woke AI interactions' from competing chatbots like Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT.
