US Bombers Fly Over Korea; Washington Examines 'Various Options'

Two US strategic bombers, accompanied by South Korean and Japanese fighter jets, conducted military exercises over the Korean Peninsula. Simultaneously, the US President and senior military officials are reviewing 'various options' regarding North Korea. South Korea's state news agency reports that B-1B bombers from the US military arrived in South Korean airspace from their base in Guam on the night of October 10. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that they practiced in the East Sea/Japanese Sea alongside two F-15 fighters. The US military, in a separate statement, noted that Japanese fighters also joined the exercise; this is the first time US bombers have conducted nighttime drills with fighters from both South Korea and Japan. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff mentioned that this drill is part of 'regular military exercises' aimed at enhancing what they describe as 'extended deterrence' against North Korea. Reuters quoted US Air Force Major Patrick Applegate stating that 'safe and effective nighttime flights and exercises with allies are part of important cooperation between the US, Japan, and South Korea and aim to enhance the tactical capabilities of each country.' Major Applegate emphasized that these exercises are 'a clear demonstration of our capabilities to conduct similar operations at any time and place by US allies.' Concurrently, reports from Washington indicate that the US President met with the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to discuss 'various options' related to North Korea. According to White House spokesperson James Mattis, the Secretary of Defense and Joseph Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, provided an overview of new developments and options to Donald Trump. Sarah Sanders stated that 'the meeting and discussions focused on various options that could be employed in response to any North Korean aggression, if necessary, to prevent its threat against the US and its allies.' Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated following several missile tests by Pyongyang, including long-range missiles capable of reaching US territory, which reports indicate have been successful, as well as North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test. This comes amid increased international and multilateral sanctions against Pyongyang in recent months. Mr. Trump described negotiations with Pyongyang as a 'waste of time' over the past 25 years and stated that 'only one thing will work' regarding North Korea. The US Secretary of Defense, on the other hand, emphasized the need for military readiness in a speech on Monday while referring to the North Korean crisis and stressing the necessity of diplomacy. Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, described the possession of nuclear weapons as a 'strong deterrent' for defending the sovereignty of his country just a day prior. Meanwhile, reports from within North Korea in recent days indicate changes at the top of its government. South Korean defense officials also announced on Tuesday that North Korean special forces conducted exercises in mid-September, apparently preparing for a paratrooper assault on the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul. Seoul defense officials stated that this military exercise was the first of its kind in North Korea.
