Vote on Iran Agreement Expected Monday at UN Security Council

According to reports, members of the UN Security Council are expected to convene next Monday, July 29, to approve the nuclear agreement reached between Tehran and six world powers. The Associated Press reports that the resolution was presented to Security Council members last Wednesday. Iranian diplomats and the six powers have also informed the council members about the negotiations and the results achieved. The approval of the comprehensive agreement resolution from July 23 in Vienna is almost certain, as all five permanent members with veto power in the Security Council were themselves negotiating parties with Iran. According to Agence France-Presse, the new resolution will replace existing frameworks against Iran. Iran's nuclear file was brought to the UN Security Council during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's presidency and has been accompanied by various sanctions and non-sanction resolutions. According to the same agency, UN sanctions against the sale and export of conventional weapons will remain for five years, and sanctions on intercontinental missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads will remain for eight years. This resolution also provides a mechanism for the potential re-imposition of sanctions if Tehran does not fulfill its commitments. A joint commission will be formed to address complaints or requests regarding such matters. The draft resolution was presented behind closed doors to the Security Council by Samantha Power, the senior US representative at the UN.
