Zelensky Arrives in Japan for G7 Summit

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, arrived in Japan on Saturday to discuss with leaders of the G7 countries. Zelensky's presence coincides with increasing pressures and restrictions on Moscow due to its invasion of Ukraine, primarily aimed at drawing global attention to this issue. According to the Associated Press, strengthening international support for Ukraine is currently a high priority as the country prepares to reclaim territories occupied by Russia in the war that began in February last year. Zelensky's personal attendance at the G7 summit comes as the U.S. announced on Saturday its support for a training program for Ukrainian pilots to fly U.S.-made F-16 aircraft. Training and delivery of the F-16s will take about 18 months. The Biden administration states that training for the fourth-generation F-16 pilots will take place in Europe. Upon arriving in Japan on a plane provided by France, Zelensky tweeted: 'Japan. G7. Important meetings with partners and friends of Ukraine. Security and increased cooperation for our victory. Today peace will be closer to us.' An unnamed European Union official told reporters that Zelensky would participate in two separate sessions on Sunday. One session will be exclusively with G7 members focusing on the war in Ukraine, while the other, centered on 'peace and stability,' will include G7 members and other invited countries. Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, stated that President Biden and Zelensky will have a direct face-to-face conversation at this meeting.
