12 People Killed in Munitions Factory Explosion in Turkey

A powerful explosion shook a factory in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, January 4, resulting in the deaths of 13 people and injuring four others. Published images showed broken glass and metal fragments scattered outside the factory, with ambulances present at the scene. According to the French news agency, Ismail Ostaoglu, the local governor, stated: 'According to initial reports, 12 employees have lost their lives, and four others have been hospitalized with injuries. This incident occurred in the Karesi region of Balıkesir province.' Officials reported that the condition of the injured is not critical. They also added that no employees remained in the factory and the fire has been extinguished. The explosion occurred at 8:25 AM local time in a part of the factory that collapsed due to the intensity of the blast. The Turkish Interior Minister announced that the cause of the incident is still unclear and investigations are ongoing. Local officials referred to 'technical reasons' and ruled out sabotage. Prosecutors have also launched a comprehensive investigation. This factory produces explosives in northern Balıkesir province. Witnesses described the scene as 'like a war zone.' The bodies were transferred to the morgue, and security forces imposed restrictions to prevent a second explosion. Turkey has become one of the major exporters in the defense sector, particularly drones, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a strong supporter of this industry. In 2020, an explosion at a fireworks factory in northwestern Turkey left seven dead and 127 injured. In 2023, an explosion at a military explosives factory killed five people. That factory, located about 40 kilometers east of Ankara, was a subsidiary of the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
