Background

Are Iran and the United States talking?
The timeline above shows the latest reports on contacts, rounds of talks and mediation, newest first, as Iranian and international outlets describe them. Artesh does not predict outcomes. Since 2025 the usual channel has been indirect talks mediated by Oman, with Qatar, Switzerland (the US protecting power in Tehran) and Iraq also carrying messages.
What was the 2015 nuclear deal?
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreed in Vienna on 14 July 2015 between Iran and the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and the EU. Iran accepted limits on uranium enrichment (3.67%, a 300 kg stockpile cap) and intrusive inspections in return for relief from nuclear-related sanctions. The United States withdrew on 8 May 2018 and reimposed sanctions; from 2019 Iran stepped back from its limits and by 2023 was enriching to 60%. Talks to revive the deal in Vienna (2021–22) stalled.
What happened in the 2025 talks?
The United States and Iran held five rounds of indirect, Oman-mediated talks between 12 April and late May 2025, in Muscat and Rome, led by US envoy Steve Witkoff and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The central dispute was whether Iran could keep enriching uranium on its soil. The talks were overtaken by Israel's attack on Iran on 13 June 2025 and the US strikes of 22 June; a ceasefire took effect on 24 June. In August 2025 Britain, France and Germany triggered the JCPOA "snapback" mechanism, and UN sanctions on Iran were restored at the end of September 2025. Iran rejects the snapback as illegal.
What is "snapback"?
A clause of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015) letting any party to the nuclear deal restore the pre-2015 UN sanctions on Iran if it judges Iran to be in significant non-performance, without a new vote that Russia or China could veto. The European three used it in 2025; Iran and Russia dispute its validity because the United States had already left the deal.
Who mediates between Iran and the United States?
Oman has hosted most contacts since 2013 and the 2025 rounds; Qatar mediated the 2023 prisoner exchange and the release of $6 billion of Iranian funds; Switzerland represents US interests in Tehran and passes formal messages; Iraq has carried messages in crises. Russia and China back Iran diplomatically but do not mediate with Washington.
What are the sticking points?
Whether Iran may enrich uranium at all (Washington has demanded zero enrichment; Tehran calls enrichment a right), what happens to Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the damaged sites, the scope of inspections, Iran's missile programme and support for armed groups (which Iran refuses to negotiate), the sequence and permanence of sanctions relief, and guarantees against another US withdrawal.

The timeline is built automatically from headlines in Artesh's archive that match strike- or talks-related terms; it can include borderline items and miss events reported under other wording. Background facts are drawn from the public record (UN Security Council Resolution 2231, IAEA reports, official statements); current events are attributed to the outlet that reported them.
