15 Religious Thinkers Protest Execution Sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi: Freedom Seekers and Justice Seekers Should Not Remain Silent Against This Injustice

A group of religious thinkers outside Iran described the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist imprisoned in Lakan Prison in Rasht, as 'incredible,' emphasizing that it has created 'recurring bitterness in the minds of Iranian freedom seekers and justice seekers.' The signatories of the statement stressed that 'since the charges against Ms. Sharifeh Mohammadi are entirely unfounded, her death sentence must be immediately revoked by the Supreme Court.' The statement calls on 'Iranian freedom seekers and justice seekers not to remain silent against this blatant injustice and not to allow the blood of an innocent mother from the working class to be unjustly shed.' This statement was signed by Mohammad Javad Akbarin, Hassan Yousofi Ashkouri, Abdolali Bazargan, Meysam Badamchi, Reza Beheshti Moaz, Soroush Dabagh, Alireza Ranjbar, Zhila Mohaddeshariyat Panahi, Reza Alijani, Ahmad Alavi, Rahman Liavani, Abdollah Naseri Taheri, Dariush Mohammadpour, Yaser Mirdamadi, and Mehdi Momen. Additionally, over 50 political prisoners in Evin are on hunger strike in protest against the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi. Many activists, professional organizations, and human rights institutions, both domestic and international, have called for the revocation of Ms. Mohammadi's death sentence, labeling it 'medieval' and 'criminal.' On Tuesday, July 9, many human rights, civil, and political activists, as well as social media users, expressed their protest against Sharifeh Mohammadi's death sentence by launching a Twitter storm under the call of the 'Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi.' Protests have also been held in various countries, including Sweden, Germany, and Canada. Sharifeh Mohammadi, who had been a member of the 'Coordination Committee to Help Establish Labor Organizations' over a decade ago, was arrested in December of last year and sentenced to death on July 4 by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on charges of 'rebellion.' This sentence was issued based on accusations from the Ministry of Intelligence of the Islamic Republic regarding her alleged membership in 'Komala,' which has been strongly denied by Ms. Mohammadi, her husband, Sirous Fathi, and Komala. The Coordination Committee to Help Establish Labor Organizations, which Sharifeh Mohammadi was a member of in the 1980s, has also rejected the accusations against her. Reports indicate that she has been tortured, and government agents have accused her of 'membership in the armed Komala group' without any evidence. Political prisoners across Iran are on hunger strike in protest against Sharifeh Mohammadi's death sentence. Retirees in Tehran have demanded, 'Sharifeh Mohammadi must be freed.' Retirees in Shush condemned the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi. Sixteen political prisoners have expressed their support for Sharifeh Mohammadi, stating that the government seeks to silence dissent. Two human rights organizations condemned the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi and called for international intervention. The condemnation of the issuance of the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi continues among organizations in Iran. Amnesty International has called for the revocation of the death sentence and the immediate release of Sharifeh Mohammadi.
