150,000 Signatures for 'Campaign to Dismiss Zakhani'; Tehran Municipality Ordered Trees to be Left Dry

Alireza Zakhani, the mayor of Tehran, has faced widespread criticism for his actions. Efforts to build mosques in Qeytarieh and Laleh parks, the intentional drying of trees, and the destruction of cycling paths are among the actions that have angered Tehran citizens. Mohammad Darvish, an environmental activist, reported to 'Entekhab' about a campaign that has gathered over 150,000 signatures calling for Zakhani's dismissal. According to Darvish, this campaign has emerged in response to the anti-environmental actions of the Tehran municipality. One of the main criticisms against Zakhani is his attempt to build a mosque in Qeytarieh and Laleh parks, which faced severe opposition from citizens and environmental activists and was ultimately halted due to public pressure. Darvish also mentioned the intentional drying of 16,000 trees in Tehran, stating, 'The municipality has ordered that trees be left without water so they become infested and dry out. This action aims to change land use for the construction of hotels and commercial centers.' The destruction of cycling paths and neglect of clean transportation development are other criticisms directed at Zakhani. According to Darvish, these actions have led to increased air pollution and heightened depression among Tehran citizens. Alongside environmental criticisms, Zakhani's insulting rhetoric and electoral behavior have also caused dissatisfaction among citizens. Darvish stated, 'Instead of empathizing with the people, Zakhani accuses them and ignores their opinions.' In response to this campaign, Zakhani recently described it as 'entirely slanderous' and 'illegal.' Mehdi Chamran, the head of the Tehran City Council, also reacted to the campaign, stating, 'Do not pay attention to these campaigns; they are not campaigns, many such cases have been created.'
