18 Years in Prison for Producing AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Images

A British man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for producing and distributing images of child sexual abuse and physical abuse using real photographs of children and artificial intelligence technology. According to the court ruling issued on Monday, November 7, 27-year-old Hugh Nelson confessed to multiple sexual offenses, including creating and distributing obscene images of children, distributing non-real but obscene images of children, and encouraging child rape. The report states that Hugh Nelson received requests in chat rooms to produce naked images of children during sexual and physical abuse. The Greater Manchester Police stated in the indictment that Hugh Nelson used an AI software called 'Daz 3D', produced by an American company, to create these images and sold or distributed them online for free. According to Greater Manchester Police, this case is the largest investigation by this agency in the fight against child abuse. The American company 'Daz 3D' stated that its software license explicitly prohibits its use 'for the purpose of violating laws related to pornography, sexual abuse of children, and any other form of child exploitation.' The company condemned the misuse of any software, including its products, for such purposes and committed to enhancing its technical capabilities to prevent such occurrences. During the trial held in Bolton near Manchester, the prosecution stated that Hugh Nelson, who holds a master's degree in graphics, used real photographs of children to produce some of the images he designed on the computer. Hugh Nelson was arrested last year without any prior criminal record. He told police during interrogation that he met people online with similar inclinations and began producing these images for sale after a while. The prosecutor outside the court told reporters: 'The use of real photographs of children and turning them into the most corrupt images of child sexual abuse using AI software and computer programs is very concerning.' The prosecution had previously stated that identifying this criminal was the result of extensive investigations into the use of artificial intelligence in child sexual abuse. Greater Manchester Police also described this case as a challenge for security forces in combating pornography and child sexual abuse, as the criminal use of the AI programs and tools that Hugh Nelson used is not explicitly described in British criminal laws. In the United States, legislative bodies, the Department of Justice, and security forces have also prioritized combating the use of AI tools in child abuse and sexual exploitation. Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice submitted its first federal indictment that concerns not real photographs of children but images created by artificial intelligence to judicial authorities.
