24-Hour Ceasefire in Sudan; US and Saudi Arabia Warn Warring Parties

A ceasefire between the warring parties in the Sudanese civil war began at 6 AM local time on Saturday, June 10. Given the violation of all previous ceasefires, the likelihood of the current ceasefire being breached is high. The United States and Saudi Arabia, as mediators of this ceasefire, have warned that they will withdraw from peace efforts if either side violates it. According to a resident in northern Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, this ceasefire is 'far less' than what the people expecting an end to the war desire. This short ceasefire provides an opportunity for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the war-affected Sudanese. Since April 15 of this year, Sudan has been the scene of clashes between the army forces led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. During these deadly clashes, hundreds have been killed and nearly two million Sudanese have been displaced from their homes. Sudan has labeled the UN envoy as an 'undesirable element.' Fires in Khartoum continue; clashes over control of the arms factory persist. The US and Saudi Arabia have called for an extension of the ceasefire in Sudan. Sporadic clashes in Sudan continue after the signing of the short-term ceasefire agreement. Airstrikes are targeting the outskirts of Khartoum; food supplies in Sudan are running low.
