26 Killed in Attack on Military Base in Aden

An assault on a military base near the international airport in Aden, southern Yemen, resulted in the deaths of six Yemeni military personnel and around 20 attackers. Reuters reported on Wednesday, July 6, citing Yemeni security sources, that the attack began with two suicide bombers who detonated the vehicles they were in, followed by a group of armed militants who opened fire on the Sulban military base. According to these security sources, the attackers initially managed to seize several buildings, but ultimately, after a heavy battle lasting four hours, all of them were killed. Reuters notes that no group has claimed responsibility for this action yet, but about ten days prior, the port city of Mukalla in southern Yemen was the scene of a similar attack carried out by a group affiliated with the 'Islamic State' (ISIS). This group has managed to seize areas in Yemen over the past year, which has been embroiled in civil war. Additionally, Al-Qaeda also has an active presence in Yemen, and both groups consider the Houthi rebels and the Yemeni government as their enemies. Al-Qaeda has captured parts of eastern and southern Yemen, while ISIS has carried out numerous attacks against the country's security forces. On Monday, July 7, ISIS members killed 38 people in an attack on government forces in Mukalla.
