27 Months Imprisonment Likely for Sepideh Ghalean

The human rights organization "Hengaw" announced on Thursday, March 7, that Sepideh Ghalean, a political prisoner held in Evin Prison, is facing continued imprisonment after the reopening of two previous cases against her. According to the report, Ms. Ghalean has been sentenced to 27 months of punitive imprisonment in these cases. Hengaw pointed out that this prison sentence was issued following a complaint by Ameneh Sadat Zabihpour, a journalist from the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, and was later declared closed. The human rights organization added that Ms. Ghalean was summoned to Branch 1207 of the 2nd Criminal Court of Kachoui Tehran on July 19 of this year due to accusations of "disturbing public opinion through the dissemination of falsehoods in cyberspace" and "propaganda against the Islamic Republic in cyberspace." In this context, the one-year prison sentence for Sepideh Ghalean, which was opened following a complaint from Bushehr Prison and had been closed, has been reopened. Sepideh Ghalean, who has been arrested, tortured, and imprisoned several times, was detained again after shouting the slogan "Khamenei is Zahak, we will bury you under the ground" outside Evin Prison in March 2023 and was sentenced to two years in prison in May 2023. This civil rights activist from Khuzestan is currently in "exile" in Evin Prison in Tehran and has repeatedly requested "transfer to the prison of her residence," in Dezful. Hengaw emphasized in its report that Sepideh Ghalean has served her two-year sentence for "insulting the leadership" and should have been released, but now she remains imprisoned due to multiple fabricated cases.
