29 Individuals Sentenced to Prison in Bahrain for Involvement in Bomb Explosion

On Wednesday, January 9, the Bahraini state news agency reported that the Fourth Criminal Court of the country sentenced 29 individuals to prison terms ranging from five to twenty-five years for their involvement in a bomb explosion that resulted in the death of a police officer last year. The report added that this explosion, which occurred in January of the previous year, killed one police officer, injured several others, and damaged police patrol vehicles. The Bahraini state news agency quoted Ahmad Al-Hamadi, head of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution, stating that according to this ruling, the Bahraini citizenship of two of the convicted individuals will also be revoked. Additionally, 27 of them are required to pay compensation for material damages caused by the explosion, amounting to 130,278.2 Bahraini Dinars, equivalent to 64,738.9 USD. Bahrain has witnessed unrest since 2011. Following the onset of revolutions in some Arab countries known as the 'Arab Spring,' the Shiite majority in Bahrain protested for reforms and a greater role in governance. They accuse the Bahraini government, managed by a Sunni minority, of religious discrimination against them. However, the Bahraini government denies any discrimination against Shiites and accuses the Islamic Republic of Iran of inciting protests in the country. The protests by Shiite Bahrainis were suppressed by the country's security forces with the assistance of military forces from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, which were deployed at the request of Manama in border areas and in front of important government buildings. Since then, various regions of Bahrain, including Shiite villages, have periodically witnessed violence and skirmishes between security forces and protesters. Several times, police forces have been targeted by attacks using homemade bombs. In these clashes, dozens of opponents have also lost their lives.
