30-Ton Yellowcake Shipment Transferred to Isfahan Nuclear Facilities

On Wednesday, February 10, Iran announced the transfer of a large shipment of uranium ore, known as 'yellowcake', to its uranium enrichment facilities in Isfahan. Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, stated that the shipment consisted of 30 tons of yellowcake, which was transferred to the Isfahan facilities on Wednesday. Yellowcake is used for uranium enrichment to produce fuel for nuclear facilities. Iran claims its uranium enrichment is solely for this purpose, but Western countries are concerned that Iran may ultimately use enriched uranium for nuclear weapons production, as highly enriched uranium can be utilized in such a manner. According to Salehi, this 30-ton shipment of yellowcake was loaded from the Ardakan factory and is the second shipment from this factory to the Isfahan facilities. The Ardakan factory is considered the first yellowcake production facility in Iran. The factory's activities were suspended for nine years until they resumed this summer. Under the nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA, Iran is permitted to enrich uranium up to 3.67% purity, which is significantly lower than the 90% required for nuclear weapons. However, the United States, which exited the nuclear deal, has stated that one of its conditions for reaching a new agreement with Iran is the complete suspension of uranium enrichment. Tensions between Iran and the U.S. have significantly increased, especially following Donald Trump's directive for the U.S. to exit the nuclear agreement in May of this year and the re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran.
