34 Suspects Arrested for Membership in the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt

Egyptian officials say police have arrested 34 individuals suspected of being members of the Muslim Brotherhood, an illegal fundamentalist group in the country. According to Egyptian security sources, these 34 suspects, which include two university professors and a lawyer, were arrested on Saturday approximately 70 kilometers north of Cairo. They are accused of reviving an illegal organization. Last week, Egyptian security forces also arrested about 30 people on suspicion of membership in the same group. They were accused of intending to hold a political demonstration in a mosque in Cairo. The Muslim Brotherhood seeks to establish an Islamist government in Egypt instead of the current regime and is considered the largest and oldest opposition group in the country. Several members of the Egyptian parliament affiliated with this group have run as independent candidates in recent years to circumvent the legal ban on the organization.
