42% Surge in Iranian Tourists Entering Turkey

New statistics from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism indicate a 42% increase in the number of Iranian tourists visiting Turkey in the first half of this year. According to data published on Wednesday, August 1, over 1.442 million Iranian tourists traveled to Turkey during the first six months of this year. Iranians constitute the largest group of foreign tourists in Turkey after citizens of Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Overall, Turkey hosted 21.664 million foreign tourists in the first half of this year, which is a 10% increase compared to the same period last year, generating nearly $24 billion in revenue. Turkey aims to achieve $60 billion in revenue from foreign tourist arrivals this year. The Turkish Statistical Institute recently released a report stating that Iranians rank second in purchasing property in Turkey after Russian citizens. According to official statistics, Iranian citizens purchased 1,070 residential units in Turkey in the first half of this year. Turkey grants citizenship to any foreign citizen who invests over $400,000 in its real estate sector. In the first half of this year, a total of 10,480 residential units were sold to foreign citizens in Turkey, which is half of the amount sold in the same period last year. This decline is attributed to stricter government policies regarding citizenship for foreigners following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, as well as an increase in the investment threshold for obtaining Turkish citizenship from $250,000 to $400,000. Last year, Iranians purchased a total of 4,272 residential units in Turkey. The report from the Turkish Statistical Institute also shows that while Turkey's imports from Iran remained steady at $1.14 million in the first half of this year, its exports to Iran increased by 15% to $1.6 billion.
