43% of North Koreans Need Humanitarian Aid

The United Nations reports that the number of North Korean citizens requiring food and humanitarian aid has risen by 600,000 to approximately 11 million. Agricultural production in North Korea has reached its lowest level in a decade, exacerbated by natural disasters, lack of arable land, and poor farming practices. North Korea is also facing extensive international sanctions due to its military and nuclear tests. According to Tapan Mishra, the UN representative and coordinator in North Korea, last year's harvest was only 4.9 million tons, a decrease of 500,000 tons. Mishra states that this amount is 'the lowest in a decade' and results in a 'significant food shortage.' The new estimates indicate that the number of people in need of humanitarian aid has increased by 600,000, approaching 11 million, which constitutes 43% of North Korea's 25 million population, putting them at risk of malnutrition and disease. However, the UN must reduce the number of citizens it can assist, prioritizing those with the greatest needs, as its funding has decreased. Mishra notes that only 24% of the funding needed for North Korea has been secured, making its aid programs 'one of the smallest in terms of cash assistance received globally.' The UN office in North Korea previously stated it needed $111 million in immediate cash assistance, but it appears only a small portion of this need has been met. A statement released on March 5 indicated that $120 million in urgent aid is required. Mishra urged all donors to not let political and security concerns hinder lifesaving assistance to children, women, and men in dire need, stating, 'We cannot leave them alone.'
