According to the latest reports, 217 people have lost their lives in a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in a region in central Mexico. The earthquake occurred at noon, with its epicenter located 120 kilometers from Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. Reports indicate that several buildings in the densely populated capital have collapsed, and rescuers, police, army soldiers, and volunteers are still helping the victims. Among the deceased are 21 children from a school. The President of Mexico stated that at least 30 other children are missing. The President mentioned that at least 27 buildings in the capital have collapsed, but an hour later, the mayor of Mexico City reported that buildings have collapsed or been severely damaged at over 40 locations in the city. Power has been cut to nearly 4 million customers, and reports of gas leaks have also emerged. Among the severely damaged buildings in Mexico City are a residential complex, a factory, a supermarket, and a school. Mexico City is one of the most crowded cities in the world, home to nearly 20 million citizens. It has been reported that the intensity of the earthquake was greater in the state of Morelos than in other surrounding areas. This is the second very strong earthquake in Mexico within a month; two weeks ago, an earthquake in southern Mexico left at least 98 dead.
