A Bipartisan Proposal in the U.S. Senate to Intensify Sanctions Against the Islamic Republic

Senator Bob Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Republican Senator Bill Hagerty, has proposed a joint initiative calling for intensified sanctions against the Islamic Republic. In a statement posted on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's website, it was announced that Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat, and Senator Bill Hagerty, a Republican, presented a draft bill aimed at "imposing ongoing U.S. sanctions" on the Islamic Republic's "missile and drone program." The statement noted that as the "sunset of the JCPOA" approaches in the nuclear agreement (JCPOA), this legislator called for the "maintenance of current sanctions" as well as the imposition of "additional sanctions" against the Islamic Republic's "missile and drone program." Bob Menendez and Bill Hagerty reminded that the United Nations Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic's ballistic missiles and drones will expire in October 2023. For this draft to become law, it must first be approved by the committee and then by the Senate floor, followed by a vote in the House of Representatives. The draft states that the development and proliferation of ballistic missile and drone technology will continue to be subject to U.S. sanctions, even if this expansion of UN restrictions is blocked by "Russia and China." The proposal also mandates the U.S. government to provide Congress with a comprehensive report on the Islamic Republic's missile activities, including strategies to ensure the renewal of UN restrictions and deterrence against activities related to the Islamic Republic's missiles. Senator Jim Risch, recalling that the bans on Iran's ballistic missiles will expire in October of this year, stated: "We are approaching another dangerous sunset of the JCPOA." He added regarding the new sanctions: "While today's sanctions are considered a start, the Biden administration is trapped and has been unable to present a broader strategy regarding Iran."
