A British Warship Destroyed an Iranian-Backed Houthi Drone

On Sunday, February 8, the British Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that the HMS Diamond warship successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone attack by the Houthis targeting the vessel in the Red Sea on Saturday. According to the ministry, no damage was inflicted on the ship or its crew. The British Ministry of Defense emphasized that 'these intolerable and illegal attacks are absolutely unacceptable, and it is our duty to protect freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.' The Iranian-backed Houthis have targeted at least 33 commercial ships and British and American warships in the Red Sea with missile and drone attacks since late November, calling for revenge against U.S. and British support for Israel's war against Hamas. On Friday, a tanker was attacked in the Gulf of Aden, causing a fire on board. Reports indicate that the crew of this tanker managed to extinguish the fire with the help of an Indian destroyer in the area. U.S. and British fighter jets, warships, and submarines have responded to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea with at least four retaliatory strikes across Yemen. General Charles Brown, the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated in an interview set to air on Sunday on ABC that U.S.-led retaliatory attacks against Iranian-backed Houthi militants in the Red Sea aim to prevent future conflict and escalation of tensions. In response to criticisms that the Biden administration is not taking the Houthis seriously enough, he clarified, 'Our goal is deterrence while protecting U.S. forces, not entering into a broad conflict and full-scale war.' He also mentioned, 'We cannot precisely predict how each of these Middle Eastern warlike groups will react to our actions, so our priority is to protect our forces and partners and keep these groups as controlled as possible.' The White House plans to re-designate this group as an international terrorist organization. Meanwhile, senior officials from China and the U.S. held candid discussions on Saturday aimed at reducing tensions between the two countries, covering a range of topics including Iran and Taiwan, during which Washington urged Beijing to compel the Islamic Republic to reduce Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. The British newspaper Telegraph reported on Wednesday, January 10, citing its intelligence sources within Iran, that the Houthi group has been trained at the 'Khamenei University of Marine Sciences and Technologies' in Zibakenar, Rasht, and that Ali Khamenei personally oversees their activities.
