A Court in Bahrain Sentences Three Shia Citizens to Death

On Thursday, March 7, the public prosecutor in Bahrain announced that a court in the country has sentenced three Shia citizens to death for the murder of three police officers, while seven others have been sentenced to life imprisonment. According to Reuters, the public prosecutor also stated that the convicted individuals' Bahraini citizenship has been revoked. These individuals are accused of being involved in an explosion in a Shia village last March, which resulted in the deaths of three police officers, including Lieutenant Mohammed Tariq Al-Shahi from the United Arab Emirates. Bahraini officials had previously stated that Mohammed Tariq Al-Shahi was part of the 'Island Shield' forces, established based on a joint security cooperation agreement among Gulf Arab countries. Military forces from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait were sent to Bahrain in 2011 to counter widespread Shia protests. It was previously reported that these forces are stationed near important government buildings and borders. However, the death of the Emirati officer indicates that at least some of these forces may have been involved in confronting protesters. Approximately four years ago, protests by the Shia majority in Bahrain began with demands for a constitutional monarchy. Initially, protesters maintained a permanent presence in the streets and chose Pearl Square in Manama as their main base. However, a crackdown by security forces ended their street presence. Since then, protesters have sporadically held demonstrations. Clashes between security forces and young protesters in Shia areas have continued almost permanently. In this context, the concerns of the Gulf monarchies regarding developments in Yemen and the 'expansion of Iranian influence' have led Bahrain to accuse the Shia opposition leader of attempting to overthrow the government.
