A Cruise Ship Rescues 68 Stranded Migrants in the Atlantic Ocean

On Thursday, June 21, the Spanish Maritime Rescue Agency announced that a cruise ship successfully rescued 68 stranded migrants in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the Associated Press, during this operation, the bodies of five individuals from the wooden boat of these migrants were also found in the waters near the Canary Islands. The Spanish Maritime Rescue Agency reported that a tanker, traveling from the northwest of Spain towards Brazil, discovered a drifting boat approximately 440 nautical miles (815 kilometers) south of Tenerife, one of the seven islands of the Canary archipelago. Spanish officials stated that a cruise ship altered its course to rescue the migrants and managed to retrieve the crew of the boat 'Insinia' as well as the bodies of three individuals who were on board. However, weather conditions forced them to leave the bodies of two others in the sea. The Spanish rescue agency expects the 'Insinia' boat to arrive at the port of Santa Cruz in Tenerife on Friday. The Canary Islands are a common destination for migrants seeking a better life in Europe, making the perilous journey across the Atlantic from northwest Africa. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior reported that in 2023, a record number of 55,618 migrants set out by boat on this route, most of whom aimed for the Canary Islands. This figure is nearly double that of 2022. The ministry also announced that more than 23,000 migrants reached the country's territory in the first half of this year. The NGO Walking Borders stated that by May of this year, over 5,000 migrants had lost their lives trying to reach the shores of Spain, primarily on the Atlantic route. The total for 2023 is projected to be 6,600, more than double the figure reported for 2022.
