A French Citizen Arrives in Paris After Being Released from Prison in Iran

Louis Arnaud, a French citizen who was arrested two years ago during widespread protests in Iran and subsequently sentenced to five years in prison on security charges by the Iranian judiciary, arrived in Paris on Thursday, June 14. He was welcomed at the airport by Stéphane Séjourné, the French Foreign Minister, and embraced his parents. The French Foreign Minister stated, "I am very happy to welcome one of our hostages who was arbitrarily imprisoned in Iran." The French President announced on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic had released a French citizen who had been imprisoned in Evin since September 2022. Emmanuel Macron, in a post on X, identified this French citizen as "Louis Arnaud" and emphasized that he would arrive in France on Thursday. He also urged Tehran officials to release three other French citizens "without delay." A French diplomatic source told AFP that Louis Arnaud left Evin prison early Wednesday and went to buy a plane ticket. Louis Arnaud is a 30-year-old banking consultant who was arrested during the nationwide protests in Iran in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the morality police. He was sentenced to five years in prison for "acting against national security." However, Arnaud's family denied the Iranian authorities' claims, stating that he "was never involved in the protest movements in Iran" and had "no political intent for his trip to Iran." The other three prisoners are "Cécile Kohler" and her partner "Jacques Paris," as well as a man known only by the first name "Olivier." The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the detention of these four individuals earlier this year as "state hostage-taking" and "ongoing extortion" by the Islamic Republic, strongly condemning the Iranian government's actions. Human rights groups believe that the Islamic Republic is seeking to gain leverage from other countries by detaining foreign nationals. The Islamic Republic has denied these accusations and refuted claims that the detention of individuals is used as a diplomatic pressure tactic. Families of French citizens imprisoned in Iran have sought assistance from the United Nations. The Committee for the Release of Cécile Kohler noted that it has been 600 days since her detention in Iran. France has warned that the escalation of war in the region will place a heavy responsibility on Iran.
