A Group of Republican Senators Urges Biden Administration to Condemn the Islamic Republic at IAEA Meeting

A group of 10 Republican senators, led by Senator Tim Scott, has called on the Biden administration to condemn the Iranian government at the upcoming International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting, citing concerns over Iran's uranium enrichment program. In a statement released on his official website on Monday, Senator Scott announced that this group of senators emphasized in their letter that 'the United States must demonstrate its leadership at the IAEA, and the risks cannot be higher than this.' The senators, in their letter sent to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, referred to Iran's enrichment activities and the increased activities of its proxy forces in the region, urging the international community to adhere to nuclear non-proliferation regulations. They have asked the Biden administration to go beyond rhetoric and take action against the Iranian regime for its repeated violations of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its commitments under the safeguards agreement, especially as the IAEA's March meeting approaches. The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, stated on Monday at the Board of Governors meeting that 'although the level of enriched uranium up to 60% has slightly decreased,' Iran's total enriched uranium reserves continue to rise. Grossi also noted the lack of any progress in 'resolving outstanding safeguards issues' between Tehran and the IAEA, emphasizing that the Iranian government has not provided 'credible technical explanations' for the presence of 'human-origin uranium particles in Varamin and Torqozabad.' The Republican senators have called for U.S. support for a 'formal review of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program' by the United Nations Security Council, stating that this formal review would ensure a coherent and transparent approach to developments in Iran's nuclear activities.
