A Man Armed with a Knife Shot Dead by Police in Western Germany

German police say they shot a man who was threatening passersby with a cold weapon in a city in the west of the country. German police officials announced on Tuesday, September 6, that this German man also threatened police officers with a knife, which led to a police response. This incident occurred in the small town of Mörs between Duisburg and Düsseldorf in western Germany. According to a statement from the German police, when officers surrounded the 26-year-old man, he attacked them with 'two knives,' which resulted in officers firing directly at him. No other individuals were harmed in this incident. Meanwhile, on the evening of September 2, in another knife attack at a street festival in the city of Solingen, three people were killed and eight others were injured, with some of the injured reported to be in critical condition. Bamdad Ismaili, a freelance journalist in Germany, reported that one of the injured is a young Iranian asylum seeker who, like other victims, was attacked in the neck and is being treated in the hospital. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised during his visit to Solingen to expel more asylum seekers. Initially, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack without providing evidence, and about 24 hours after the attack, police announced that a Syrian man, identified as the 'main suspect,' had surrendered. Olaf Scholz stated after the news of the attack: 'The criminal must be arrested quickly and face the harshest punishment.' He also promised that his government would expel more asylum seekers, stating, 'We must do everything we can to ensure that those who do not have the right to stay in Germany or cannot stay are returned and expelled.' Knife attacks and deadly shootings are relatively uncommon in Germany, and the government intends to tighten laws regarding carrying knives in public places.
