A Memorable Day in Space Exploration: From the Landing of Japan's 'Moon Sniper' to Turkey's First Astronaut Flying to the International Space Station

Japan has become the fifth country to land a spacecraft on the Moon. However, Japan faced another setback in its mission to prove the technology for 'precise' lunar landing and revive a previously failed space program. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency stated that the smart lander successfully touched down on the lunar surface and established communication with Earth, but its solar panels were unable to generate power, which was attributed to a 'wrong angle.' Hitoshi Koninaka, head of the Japan Space Laboratory, said in a press conference that the lander is currently operating solely on its battery, and they are prioritizing data transmission to Earth. This Japanese lander, nicknamed 'Moon Sniper,' attempted to land within 100 meters of its target, while the conventional accuracy of landers is several kilometers. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency claims that precise lunar landing technology will become a powerful tool for future explorations on the Moon's surface. Japan aims to play a larger role in space and has allied with the U.S. to counter China. Japan is also hosting several private space startups and plans to send an astronaut to the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis program in the coming years. Meanwhile, Turkey celebrated the journey of its first astronaut to the International Space Station on the latest commercial mission of 'Axiom Space' from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The capsule was launched by a Falcon 9 rocket and began a 36-hour flight to orbit. The four-member crew of 'Axiom-3,' representing Europe, included Alper Güzeloğlu, a 44-year-old pilot of the Turkish Air Force fighter jets and the first citizen of Turkey to go into orbit. Besides his military experience, he served as a captain for Turkish Airlines for seven years. Mr. Güzeloğlu stated that he has always been fascinated by flying and dreamed of traveling to space one day. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated this achievement on the 'X' network. The 'Axiom' missions are designed for anyone who can afford a ticket to fly to the International Space Station. The two previous Axiom missions, conducted in 2022 and 2023, took a group of wealthy traders and astronauts whose governments paid for their seats. This flight was the first Axiom mission where a space agency purchased all the seats. Additionally, each passenger had a military pilot background, which many astronauts begin their careers with.
