A Right-Wing Party Candidate in Mannheim, Germany, Injured by Stab Wounds from an Attacker

German police announced that a local candidate from the far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) was injured by stab wounds from an attacker. According to Reuters, the AfD stated that Heinrich Koch, a member of the party, was attacked on Tuesday, June 5, after confronting an individual who was tearing down campaign posters. This marks the second knife attack in Mannheim, Germany, in recent days. The AfD reported that Heinrich Koch is receiving treatment in the hospital and is not in life-threatening condition. After arresting the 25-year-old attacker, police stated that due to clear signs of mental illness, the individual was transferred to a psychiatric hospital. During a knife attack by an Afghan refugee against participants in an anti-Islam demonstration on Friday, June 2, a German police officer was killed and several others were injured. The Afghan attack on June 2 elicited reactions from Iranian users on social media, with some labeling "Islamism" as a "major threat." Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, emphasized on social media platform X that the attacker must be severely punished. The far-right AfD has made the threat posed by immigration from Islamic countries a central theme of its election campaign. According to German government statistics, verbal and physical attacks on politicians in the country have doubled since 2019.
