A Senior Pentagon Official: China, Russia, and Iran Remain Central to CENTCOM's Focus

A senior U.S. defense official stated that countries within the operational area of the U.S. Central Command, known as CENTCOM, remain important for national defense strategy and play a role in the world of strategic competition. He added that China, Russia, Iran, and extremist groups continue to be at the center of CENTCOM's attention. The unnamed senior Pentagon official, in an interview with the official U.S. Department of Defense website, said, "The United States is the partner of choice for countries in the region, but China and Russia are trying to expand their influence and change the strategic position to their advantage." According to this senior U.S. defense official, the U.S. presence in the CENTCOM area reassures America's allies, while China has significant economic interests in the Persian Gulf, including securing 50% of its crude oil and 30% of its gas needs. This defense official noted that the Russians act in an unprofessional and dangerous manner, especially in the air. Among the concerning actions is Russia's attempt to engage with U.S. drones in the fight against ISIS. The official stated, "We have spoken relatively clearly and published a lot about Russia's activities in Syria. They continue to engage in activities that are very concerning to us." He also referred to Iran's activities in the region, considering Iran and extremist groups a threat, adding, "I would say if there is anything that could divert our national defense strategy and focus on challenges ahead, such as China, it would be Iran and terrorism." Referring to the IRGC's attacks on some tankers in the Persian Gulf waters, he said, "On the maritime front, Iran has made efforts to stop and seize tankers." The official stated, "We are in close cooperation between naval and air forces to ensure that there is adequate air and sea coverage in the region to deter Iran from pursuing tankers." Currently, A-10 aircraft are flying over the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Persian Gulf area. We have also begun F-16 flights this weekend to strengthen this presence.
