A Truck in Stockholm Runs Over Pedestrians, Killing at Least Four

Swedish media reported on Friday, April 7, that the driver of a beer truck attacked people by driving onto the sidewalk and into a store in a shopping center in Stockholm, the capital. The Prime Minister of Sweden has described the attack as terrorist. According to the Associated Press, Radio Sweden announced in the early hours of the incident that three people had been killed, and SVT television reported hearing gunfire. New information released late Friday by the Stockholm City Council confirmed the death of three people and reported that 15 others were injured, nine of whom are in critical condition. However, the Swedish police reported that four people had been killed and 12 injured. The police also confirmed that one person has been arrested in connection with the incident. Reports indicate that the truck initially ran over pedestrians on the sidewalk and then entered a store. Swedish media say that the truck had been stolen prior to the attack. The Aftonbladet newspaper reported that the beer company Spandareps announced that one of its trucks had been stolen early Friday morning. An eyewitness told the newspaper, 'We were standing next to a shoe store when we heard a noise... and then people started screaming. I looked into the store and saw a large truck inside it.' Former Prime Minister Carl Bildt tweeted that the police evacuated the area and that police and ambulances have been deployed in central areas. The Swedish police stated that they received calls indicating that a truck driver was injuring people on the main street of Stockholm, Drottninggatan. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven described the attack as 'terrorist' and stated that 'Sweden has been attacked.' No individual or group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
