A U.S. Treasury Official Pressures Lebanon to Halt Money Transfers from Iran to Hezbollah

The Associated Press reports, citing informed sources, that a senior U.S. Treasury official who visited Beirut pressured Lebanese officials to stop the transfer of funds from Iran to Hezbollah and also to prevent money transfers to Hamas through Lebanon. Jesse Baker, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia and the Middle East in the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, met with Lebanese politicians and financial officials on the 7th and 8th of March. A Treasury official, who requested anonymity, told the Associated Press that Baker expressed 'specific concerns' regarding 'the transfer of Hamas funds through Lebanon, the transfer of Hezbollah funds from Iran to Lebanon, and then to other areas,' calling for preventive measures in this regard. The official emphasized that these groups need financial flows to pay their fighters and conduct military operations; otherwise, they would not be able to achieve their goals. The Treasury official also stressed the importance of Lebanon adhering to international standards for combating money laundering and terrorist financing to attract investment from the U.S. and other parts of the world and to help the country emerge from its long-standing crisis. Since the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas on southern Israel, which led to Israeli military operations in Gaza, Hezbollah and Israel have also engaged in clashes, primarily limited to the border areas of the two countries. Following the Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of over 250 others, Israel launched an assault on Gaza aimed at destroying this Iran-backed militant group. The Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, reports that the death toll from Israeli attacks has exceeded 30,000. In response, Israel has repeatedly emphasized that Hamas uses civilians as human shields. However, the critical conditions for civilians in Gaza and repeated warnings from human rights organizations have led to criticisms of Israel. One of the staunchest critics of Israel since the onset of the Gaza war has been Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In a recent speech in Istanbul, Erdoğan stated that Netanyahu and his government are committing 'crimes against humanity' in Gaza, placing their names alongside Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin. He had previously labeled Israel a 'terrorist state' and accused it of committing 'genocide' in Gaza. In his speech, Erdoğan again refrained from recognizing Hamas as a terrorist group, stating that Turkey firmly supports Hamas and its leaders. The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, Israel, and several other countries worldwide have listed the Palestinian group Hamas as a terrorist organization. Israeli Defense Minister: Hezbollah's aggression has brought us closer to a 'critical moment.' A U.S. special envoy will travel to Beirut to reduce tensions between Hezbollah and Israel. Reports indicate that Iranian proxy attacks have decreased following the deaths of three American soldiers. Regional reports suggest that the IRGC has given Hezbollah the green light to increase attacks on Israel.
