A Vehicle Crashes into a Crowd in Germany, Resulting in Two Deaths and Driver's Suicide

A van crashed into a crowd outside a famous bar in the city of Münster in western Germany, leaving two dead, and the driver also committed suicide. According to the Associated Press, a senior German security official stated that there are no indications that Islamist motives were behind the incident that occurred on Saturday afternoon, April 6. Herbert Reul, the Minister of the Interior for North Rhine-Westphalia, of which Münster is a part, stated that the driver of the van, who attacked a crowd outside a well-known bar, was a German citizen. He mentioned that the investigation is in its early stages but added that 'currently, there is nothing to suggest that Islamist motives were behind this incident.' Reul emphasized that 'we are investigating all aspects.' He confirmed the final death toll from the attack as 'two people' and noted that the driver also killed himself. The motives of the attacker are still unclear. His identity has not been disclosed, but the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that the suspect was a middle-aged individual with mental disorders. The newspaper added that German police searched the suspect's apartment for explosives. Earlier reports had stated that three people had died in the incident. Police say 20 others were injured, six of whom are in serious condition. The German government has expressed condolences to the victims' families. Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, stated that she is 'deeply shocked by the events in Münster.' In her statement, she said, 'Everything necessary must be done for the investigation of this crime and to support the victims and their relatives.' Ulrike Demmer, the government spokesperson, also tweeted, 'Horrific news from Münster.' Münster, with a population of 300,000, is one of Germany's major university cities, hosting 50,000 students. The city center, where the attack occurred, is filled with bars, restaurants, and cultural institutions. This incident recalls the December 2016 truck attack in Berlin that left 12 dead. Anis Amri, a Tunisian asylum seeker with ties to Islamists, hijacked a truck on December 19, 2016, killed its driver, and then drove into a local market, killing 11 and injuring several others.
