A WHO Official: Gaza's Healthcare System is Collapsing

A World Health Organization official who recently returned from Gaza said on Wednesday that the healthcare system in Gaza is rapidly collapsing, and staff urgently need more equipment. Shan Casey, a WHO official, told reporters at the United Nations, "I saw with my own eyes that the healthcare system is collapsing." Casey spent five weeks in Gaza since early December, meeting with medical professionals and patients throughout the Gaza Strip. He stated, "I saw patients every day with severe burns, with open fractures, waiting hours or days for care in hospitals, and they often asked me for food and water." Casey emphasized that a ceasefire is the most critical need; however, he noted that access, the ability to move people, and humanitarian logistics safely and quickly within Gaza also help alleviate suffering. In another development, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, said on Wednesday, January 17, in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the parties involved in the Gaza war "are ignoring international laws, violating the Geneva Conventions, and even breaching the UN Charter." According to Reuters, he pointed out the deaths and injuries of civilians, most of whom are women and children, adding that civilian homes are being bombed, forcing them to flee their homes. Mr. Guterres also highlighted the deprivation of civilians in Gaza from humanitarian aid, reiterating his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the region and a process for establishing lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians based on a two-state solution. The Biden administration has been trying to balance its long-standing support for Israel with growing concerns about the deaths or injuries of Palestinian civilians in the war against Hamas militants since the October 7 attack. The ongoing tensions in the region; the likelihood of war between Israel and Lebanon has increased. The U.S. Secretary of State: Israel will not achieve "real security" without the establishment of a Palestinian state.
