Abbas Araghchi: The Lifting of UN Security Council Resolutions is a Victory for Iran

Abbas Araghchi, a member of the Iranian negotiating team, described the lifting of United Nations Security Council resolutions against Iran's nuclear program as a victory for the Islamic Republic in the Lausanne nuclear negotiations. One day after the nuclear agreement between Tehran and global powers in Lausanne, this Iranian Foreign Ministry official stated in an interview with the Islamic Republic's state television: "This victory is the result of ten years of comprehensive struggle by the Iranian nation." According to him, the annulment of six binding UN Security Council resolutions issued under Chapter Seven against Iran is unprecedented. The political agreement reached in Lausanne commits Iran to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the European Union and the United States lifting their sanctions, and the UN Security Council also issuing a resolution to end the six previous resolutions against Iran's nuclear program. Iranian officials emphasize that the Islamic Republic's nuclear activities and uranium enrichment will continue, albeit in a limited manner and under international supervision. Abbas Araghchi also stated: "The fact that the world now respects and recognizes Iran's nuclear program is our greatest achievement during the negotiations. The international community and the six powerful countries of the world recognize this program despite all the resolutions, and even there is an agreement for other countries to assist it, which is the greatest achievement of the negotiations." He added, "The world has now realized that it must deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran with dignity because there is no other language acceptable to us, neither the language of threat nor the language of sanctions." On Friday, President Hassan Rouhani also described the Lausanne nuclear agreement as a win-win situation for Iran and global powers, stating that the day of reaching this agreement will remain in the historical memory of the Iranian people. However, some conservative figures have criticized this agreement, including Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor-in-chief of Kayhan newspaper, who said, "We have given a saddled horse and received a torn bridle in return." In this context, John Kerry stated: "The agreement with Iran is vital for the region." The Lausanne agreement has increased the hopes of Iranian citizens for change. The temporary Friday prayer leader of Tehran has expressed support for the Lausanne agreement. Zarif stated: "None of Iran's nuclear activities will be halted or stopped." Fabius remarked: "There is still no agreement on the timing of lifting Iran's sanctions." Obama addressed opponents of the nuclear agreement: "Do you think war is better?" An emergency meeting of the Israeli government stated that the nuclear agreement "endangers the existence of Israel."
