Abbas Daris, a detainee from the November 2019 protests, sentenced to 14 years in prison

The lawyer of Abbas Daris, one of the detainees from the November 2019 protests, announced on Wednesday, December 13, that her client has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by the third criminal court of Khuzestan province on charges of "premeditated murder" and "possession and carrying of weapons." Fereshteh Tabanian stated on the social media platform X that the judge considered the evidence for the verdict to be based on his own knowledge, and she noted that a retrial regarding her client’s death sentence is still open in the Supreme Court. She expressed hope that this "unjust sentence will be overturned." Tabanian mentioned that out of the 14 years of imprisonment, ten years are enforceable for her client and added that she has appealed this ruling. She maintains that Abbas Daris had no involvement in the killing of Reza Sayadi. Reza Sayadi, an officer of the special forces of the police, was killed on November 27, 2019, in Chaharmahal (Jahrom) Mahshahr in Khuzestan province. According to human rights organizations, dozens were killed by government forces on that day. Following this, Abbas Daris and his brother, Mohsen Daris, were arrested on December 7, 2019, on charges of killing Reza Sayadi and subsequently tried. At the end of the trial, Mohsen Daris was acquitted, but Abbas Daris was sentenced to death. At that time, a source close to Abbas Daris told Voice of America that his wife suffered a stroke and died after hearing the news of the death sentence. Mr. Daris has three children. Fereshteh Tabanian also wrote on her X account that there is no confession or evidence indicating her client's involvement in this incident. She also reported on the trial of her other client, Mohsen Daris, Abbas Daris's brother, stating that he was "acquitted of the charge of complicity in murder and sentenced to two years in prison for possession of weapons." According to this lawyer, Mohsen Daris had been in Sepidar prison in Ahvaz since 2019 until about a month ago, when he was transferred to Mahshahr prison upon his request.
