Abbas Korkori, a death row inmate in Ahvaz, has been deprived of 'phone calls and visits'

According to a human rights source, Abbas Korkori, known as Majid Korkori, whose death sentence has been confirmed by the Supreme Court and is held in Shiban Prison in Ahvaz, has been deprived of 'phone calls and visits with family.' Hahrana, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, announced on Thursday, February 15, that Majid Korkori last managed to meet with his family on January 27 of this year, and since then, the possibility of meeting with his family has been 'taken away from him.' Korkori's death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in January of this year, and his case was referred to the execution branch of the court in Izeh. This citizen from Izeh was sentenced to death by the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Ahvaz on charges including 'moharebeh' (waging war against God) and 'ifsad fil arz' (corruption on earth). Iranian officials have accused him of being involved in the deadly shooting on November 16, 2022, against citizens in Izeh during nationwide protests; an allegation that has been repeatedly denied by the survivors and families of the victims of that incident, including the family of Kian Pirfalak. Meanwhile, the legal advisors group, Dadban, reported on Tuesday, February 10, citing 'the family' of Majid Korkori, that a request for retrial has been filed with the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic for this death-sentenced protester. Dadban wrote on the social media platform X: 'According to Negar Korkori, Majid Korkori's sister, the request for retrial for her brother has been registered in this court in protest against the death sentence issued by the lower court and the confirmation of this sentence by the Supreme Court.' According to this report, Majid Korkori's sister stated that 'his mother and father have finally been able to meet with their brother in prison after a long time,' and 'Majid, in this meeting, again emphasized his innocence,' stating, 'I did not kill anyone, why was I sentenced to death?' This comes while previous reports indicated that the death sentence for this protester from Izeh in Khuzestan province had been sent to the criminal execution department in Ahvaz. The Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran confirmed the death sentence issued in the lower court for Majid Korkori in early January, despite existing flaws and ambiguities in the case. Negar Korkori, Majid's sister, wrote on social media X: 'We, the families of Reza Rasayi and Majid Korkori, die once with every sunrise, and until our brothers have no contact, we experience death thousands of times.' She once again urged the people of Iran to be the 'voice of innocence' for these two imprisoned protesters at risk of execution.
