ABC's $15 Million Settlement with Trump to End Defamation Lawsuit

ABC News and its chief anchor, George Stephanopoulos, have agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, and to express regret over their false statements. This agreement, which was publicly released on Saturday, indicates that both parties have reached a settlement to avoid a costly trial. According to the agreement, ABC News will allocate $15 million as a charitable contribution to the Trump Presidential Library and Museum. This amount is intended to establish a foundation similar to those of other U.S. presidents' libraries. Additionally, ABC will pay $1 million for the legal fees of Trump's attorneys. George Stephanopoulos and ABC have committed to publishing a statement titled 'regret' at the bottom of an online article related to the March 10, 2024 program. The statement reads: 'ABC News and George Stephanopoulos express regret for the statements made about President Donald J. Trump during George Stephanopoulos's interview with Representative Nancy Mace on the program “This Week” on March 10, 2024.' Trump filed the lawsuit after Stephanopoulos claimed in an interview with Republican Representative Nancy Mace from South Carolina that Trump had been convicted of 'rape' in a civil case. While a federal jury had only convicted Trump of 'sexual abuse,' this claim is legally different from the definition of rape under New York law. Initially, Stephanopoulos rejected Trump's allegations, stating on a television program that he would not back down from his duties. He stated, 'Trump is suing me because I used the word “rape,” even though a judge confirmed that this actually happened.' However, following Judge Lizette M. Reid's order for both parties to attend pre-trial sessions before the December 24 deadline for summary judgment requests, both parties reached a final agreement and avoided trial. This settlement has been filed in the federal court for the Southern District of Florida, where Trump has also filed other complaints against networks like CBS and CNN. He has sought $10 billion in damages from CBS for 'deceptive behavior' in an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris in October. Recently, Judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed the case related to the 2020 election against Trump, and all charges against Trump in the classified documents case have been dropped following a court ruling regarding the illegal appointment of a special counsel. The resolution of this lawsuit is a significant step in Trump's efforts to counter media allegations and maintain his public image ahead of the official start of his presidency.
