Abdollah Momeni Released from Prison Following Closure of His Case

Fazlollah Momeni, the brother of political activist Abdollah Momeni, announced his brother's release and the closure of his case. On Sunday, September 9, he stated in an interview with 'Shargh Network' that Mr. Momeni was released after the Supreme Court accepted a retrial and reduced his prison sentence. Fazlollah Momeni noted that the announced charge against Abdollah Momeni carried a prison sentence of six months to one year, adding: 'The law emphasizes that if a maximum prison sentence is issued for an individual, the reason must be stated, which the initial court failed to do. Following the retrial and acceptance by the Supreme Court, his release order was issued, and the case was closed.' Abdollah Momeni, a political activist, was transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran on January 17, 2023, to serve his one-year prison sentence, which was accompanied by physical abuse from prison guards. Abdollah Momeni returned to prison after 'the non-extension of his leave.' His trial and the one-year prison sentence were due to his participation and speech at the virtual meeting 'Dialogue for the Salvation of Iran.' This meeting was held following a statement by Mir Hossein Mousavi, the leader of the 2009 protest movement, who wrote and published a statement from his house arrest, calling for a referendum and the establishment of a constituent assembly. Abdollah Momeni had previously spent five years in prison following the protests against the results of the 2009 presidential election. A letter he published from prison during his first year of incarceration revealed the severe physical and psychological torture he endured during interrogation.
