Abdollah Momeni Sent to Prison to Serve One Year Sentence After Appearing at the Execution Unit

Abdollah Momeni was sent to prison on Wednesday morning, January 17, to serve a one-year sentence for participating in the "Dialogue for the Rescue of Iran" conference. According to his lawyer, Hassan Asadi Zeydabadi, the imprisonment of this well-known political activist followed a summons and several calls regarding the necessity of his presence at the execution unit. In response to the judiciary's claim that Momeni insisted on going to prison while the judge was in favor of postponing the execution of the sentence, Zeydabadi stated on X network: "No judicial authority suggested a postponement. I also visited yesterday to be informed if the sentence was not to be executed, and they said no changes had occurred." Zeydabadi emphasized that the claim that his client insisted on going to prison is irrational and false, adding, "The truth is that Momeni did not request a postponement, nor was there any suggestion from the judicial authority." He further stated that if the claim of a judicial authority's suggestion for postponement were true, "there would definitely be records of it in the case file, which there are not!" Zeydabadi continued that a one-week or ten-day postponement, even with medical documents, would not solve any issues and would only lead to uncertainty and delay. He added that Momeni did not submit any request for postponement of the prison sentence and that it is possible to seek leave after the start of imprisonment due to his wife's illness. This message from Momeni's lawyer was in response to claims made by the Mizan news agency, affiliated with the judiciary, which reported that "given the family circumstances," the judge intended to delay the execution of the sentence for a while, but faced opposition and insistence from Momeni to execute the sentence on the same day. Meanwhile, Ardeshir Amir Arjamand, a political activist close to Mir Hossein Mousavi, announced on Instagram that Abdollah Momeni was severely beaten during his transfer due to refusing to wear handcuffs by the security personnel of the 33rd Revolutionary Court and their security forces, and he was sent to prison with a broken nose. Amir Arjamand wrote that the prosecutor's forces shouted during Momeni's transfer: "No one can stop us, and there is nothing you can do." He added that Momeni's companions were also severely beaten. Abolfazl Ghadiani, a political activist, criticized the "beating" of Abdollah Momeni at Evin Court, stating that the "tyrannical oppressors of Iran" and their associates are worried that activists like Momeni will expose the true nature of the "sham elections," which is why they are hastily and violently arrested. He added: "If anything happens to Abdollah, the security forces and the judiciary must be held accountable, but the main culprit is Ali Khamenei."
