Access to Addiction Treatment Centers in Iran: One in Every 52 People

The website 'Iran Open Data Center' in its latest research indicates that in the year 1400 (2021), one in every 52 Iranians, either voluntarily or involuntarily, sought treatment at addiction centers. The total number of visitors in this year exceeded one million six hundred thousand, which is higher than any of the five previous years. Among these, about 109 thousand were sent to rehabilitation centers by judicial order, while the rest visited these centers either personally or through family referrals. According to this research, although the amount of drug seizures in the year 1400 was lower than in 1399, both years showed figures exceeding 100 thousand tons. Between the years 1395 and 1400, 75% of the seized drugs were opium, followed by cannabis (such as hashish, marijuana, etc.) which accounted for 11 to 16 percent of the seized drugs. Calculating the amount of seizures per population, it can be said that in the year 1400, 12 grams of drugs were seized for every Iranian, of which 9 grams were opium. The amount of these seizures is notably higher in the southeastern provinces of Iran, namely South Khorasan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Kerman, and Hormozgan, with per capita figures ranging from 53 to 136 grams.
