Acting Head of U.S. Secret Service Reports 'Fundamental Changes' in the Agency

The acting head of the United States Secret Service told a congressional committee that extensive reforms have been made to the agency's security procedures following an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Donald Trump in July. Ronald Rowe, speaking before a committee comprised of seven Republican and six Democratic representatives investigating two failed assassination attempts on Trump during the current election campaign, stated, 'We must acknowledge our failure on July 13, 2024. I personally bear the heavy burden of the truth that we nearly lost one of our protectees, and in this incident and failure, we also lost a father and a husband.' He described the assassination attempt on Donald Trump as 'a symbol of the inability to meet the expectations and responsibilities of the Secret Service' and expressed shame over the Pennsylvania incident, noting, 'After that incident, we initiated a series of reforms. These reforms include increasing training for personnel, improving communication with local law enforcement, and expanding Trump's security team.' The acting head of the U.S. Secret Service also emphasized that the mindset of 'doing more with less resources' has been eliminated from the agency, which is currently addressing personnel shortages and plans to hire 650 special agents and 350 uniformed officers in the coming months. The Secret Service has faced criticism regarding personnel shortages and weaknesses in communication systems following several assassination attempts in recent months. In an incident in July, a shooter fired eight rounds at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring Trump's ear and killing one attendee. The Secret Service sniper took down the assailant. Two months later, an armed individual was arrested near one of Trump's golf courses in Florida, allegedly intending to kill Trump while he was playing golf. The indictment of the suspect in the assassination attempt on Trump has led to dissatisfaction among American lawmakers regarding the performance of the Secret Service. Following the second assassination attempt on Trump, Biden has called for strengthening the U.S. Secret Service. The U.S. has warned the Islamic Republic that any assassination attempt against Donald Trump would be considered 'an act of war.' An armed suspect was also arrested near a Trump campaign rally in California. The Islamic Republic has not ceased its attempts to hack and disclose documents from Donald Trump's campaign headquarters. Trump has been informed of the latest information related to the alleged assassination attempt by the Islamic Republic against him. The Secret Service report highlighted 'missed opportunities' to prevent the unsuccessful assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The assailant had requested the Iranian government to assassinate the former U.S. president in his book.
