Afghan man killed by German police after attacking football spectators

German police report that they have shot dead an Afghan national who attacked several spectators at a private party watching the Euro 2024 opening match with a knife. On Saturday, June 15, the German news agency reported that the assailant attacked individuals at a private gathering watching the football match. The police did not disclose the name of the assailant but stated that he was a 27-year-old Afghan national. This Afghan man initially injured a 23-year-old compatriot with a 'knife-like' tool, who later died from his injuries. He then attacked three German nationals at the private party, two of whom are reported to be in critical condition. The incident occurred yesterday evening in the small town of Wellemarstadt, located 130 kilometers west of Berlin. Local police reported that the Afghan man still had the knife in his hand when officers arrived at the scene and attempted to attack the police as well. Two police officers shot the Afghan national, who was later taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The police stated that the motive for this man's attack on a compatriot and German nationals is still unclear. The Ministry of the Interior of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where Wellemarstadt is located, has indicated that police presence in the state has been increased. This marks the third attack by Afghan nationals in Germany in less than three weeks. The Frankfurt prosecutor's office and police announced on June 11 that a 41-year-old German woman was severely injured in an attack by a 19-year-old Afghan national. The assailant attacked the German woman while she was sitting on a park bench near the 'Main' river, inflicting several knife wounds to her neck and head. The German police stated that the victim was saved by the intervention of passersby, and the assailant fled the scene but was arrested while hiding in the bushes. Another 25-year-old Afghan national also injured several people and killed a police officer during an attack on a far-right group gathering in Mannheim on June 1. In this attack, the assailant used a knife to attack participants, injuring political activist Michael Sturzenberger, a police officer, and four others. The German government has announced that it is considering the expulsion of migrants from countries like Afghanistan and Syria, who are considered a security threat in the country. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated on June 6 that she is doing everything possible to resume the deportation of criminal migrants to countries like Afghanistan and Syria. According to Ms. Faeser, those who are considered a 'potential threat' to Germany should be expelled 'quickly'.
