Afghanistan Summons Pakistani Ambassador

On Wednesday, February 19, the Afghan Foreign Ministry summoned Zahid Nasrullah, the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul, due to his statements regarding the impact of tensions between Pakistan and India on the peace process in Afghanistan. According to Reuters, the Afghan Foreign Ministry stated in a press release following the summoning of the Pakistani ambassador that Zahid Nasrullah's remarks contradict 'Pakistan's commitments to establishing peace in Afghanistan.' The U.S. government has urged Pakistan to punish those responsible for the deadly attack in Indian Kashmir. Tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated following a suicide attack on police forces last week in Indian Kashmir, which was claimed by the Pakistan-based Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammed, resulting in the deaths of 40 Indian police officers. The Indian government holds Pakistan responsible for this attack. The Pakistani government has denied involvement in the attack and has called for United Nations intervention. Zahid Nasrullah stated that any potential Indian attack on Pakistan would undermine stability in the entire region and affect peace efforts in Afghanistan. These remarks have elicited reactions from Afghan officials. The Afghan Foreign Ministry, in its statement, urged Pakistan to fulfill its commitments regarding Afghanistan, especially concerning peace in the country, and to refrain from making irrelevant statements that do not resolve issues. Since the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947, three wars have occurred between the two countries, two of which were over the disputed Kashmir region. Since both countries tested their nuclear weapons in 1998, there has been no full-scale war, but temporary conflicts have repeatedly occurred along the border in the Kashmir region.
