Ahmad Zeidabadi Selected as 'Champion of Press Freedom'

The International Press Foundation in Vienna announced that Ahmad Zeidabadi, a journalist and political analyst, is deemed worthy of the title 'Champion of Press Freedom' in the 68th edition of this award. The statement from this global organization, published on Monday, March 1, refers to Ahmad Zeidabadi as a figure who has bravely fought for freedom of expression, human rights, and democracy in his country and has faced persecution from the Iranian government during this struggle. The title 'Champion of Press Freedom' is always awarded to journalists who have made significant contributions to promoting media freedom in their country and have thus been put at risk. In this regard, the International Press Foundation mentions the multiple confrontations of the Iranian government with Ahmad Zeidabadi, which have included solitary confinement, exile, and a ban on social and political activities. Ahmad Zeidabadi was arrested during the events following the 2009 presidential election in Iran and was sentenced to six years in prison, five years of exile, and a lifetime ban on political and social activities. He completed the six-year prison term and was then transferred to Gonabad to serve his exile, but the prosecutor's office revoked his exile after three months. Barbara Trionfi, the executive director of the International Press Foundation, explained the reasons for selecting Ahmad Zeidabadi as 'Champion of Press Freedom,' stating that this title is awarded for his 'exceptional courage and resilience and his commitment to the cause of media freedom and freedom of expression in Iran.' She also emphasized that despite the ongoing repression by the Iranian government, Zeidabadi has shown unparalleled courage and determination to support reforms in his country. The report from the International Press Foundation further states that Ahmad Zeidabadi, in a message to this foundation, expressed that in his situation, one might think he is condemned to 'silent death' and completely forgotten, but the news that the International Press Foundation has selected him as 'Champion of Press Freedom' serves as a reminder that colleagues and organizations around the world have not forgotten him. Finally, the report states that the International Press Foundation will present its award to Ahmad Zeidabadi at a special ceremony to be held on March 20 in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Mr. Zeidabadi was also the recipient of the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize known as 'Guillermo Cano' in 2011.
