Ahmadreza Jalali's Hunger Strike Enters Fourth Day in Evin Prison

Ahmadreza Jalali, a dual Iranian-Swedish citizen facing execution, has entered the fourth day of his hunger strike in Evin Prison in protest against his conditions and the indifference of the Swedish government. Vida Mehran-Nia, Jalali's wife, wrote on Saturday, July 9, that 'the fourth day of Ahmadreza Jalali's hunger strike in Evin Prison comes at a time when his physical condition is very weak and his life is in severe danger as he enters the fourth day of the strike.' In her message on X (formerly Twitter), Mehran-Nia addressed the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Sweden. Jalali has stated that he began his hunger strike in protest against not being included in the exchange of two Swedish prisoners in Iran for Hamid Nouri. According to Vida Mehran-Nia, her husband began the hunger strike on Wednesday, July 6. She previously mentioned on her X account that Jalali has endured nearly three thousand days of 'unimaginable torment' in 'the notorious Evin Prison,' and despite knowing that the hunger strike could be fatal due to his fragile health, he has no other option. Ahmadreza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish physician, traveled to Tehran in spring 2016 at the invitation of the University of Tehran for a lecture and was arrested. Iranian judicial authorities sentenced Jalali to death on charges of 'espionage,' which he and his wife have repeatedly denied. This dual citizen has previously gone on hunger strikes in protest against the court's ruling and the imminent execution. Recently, Jalali criticized Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in an audio message for being left out during the prisoner exchange in Iran. He pointed out the release of Johan Flodros, a Swedish citizen, and Saeed Azizi, a dual Iranian-Swedish citizen, who were exchanged for Hamid Nouri, emphasizing, 'I believe my remaining in Iran is a clear discrimination.' Hamid Nouri, a former deputy warden of Gohardasht Prison, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Swedish Supreme Court for involvement in the execution of thousands of political prisoners in the 1980s, the highest penalty under Swedish law. Nouri's release and return to Iran sparked a wave of protests and public outrage among Iranians and widespread reactions from political and human rights figures. Siamak Namazi stated that leaving Ahmadreza Jalali to his fate in Iran is 'against conscience.' Ahmadreza Jalali continues his hunger strike as a dual citizen facing execution in Evin. A former hostage of the Islamic Republic protested to the Swedish government, stating that the indifference to Ahmadreza Jalali in the exchange for Hamid Nouri was a 'deep deception.' Jalali told the Swedish Prime Minister after Nouri's exchange, 'You left me with the threat of execution in Evin.' A Swedish diplomat exchanged for Nouri proposed to his boyfriend. After being released from the Islamic Republic's prison, the Swedish diplomat said, 'I am in the seventh heaven.' A letter from 15 former hostages of the Islamic Republic to the Swedish Prime Minister urged serious action for the release of Ahmadreza Jalali.
