Ain al-Asad Base Targeted by Drone Attack

Two armed drones targeted Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq, which hosts American and other international forces in western Iraq. Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing a security source and a government source, that this drone attack, which occurred early Tuesday, resulted in no casualties or damage. Attacks on American forces in the Middle East have increased following the Israel-Hamas war, raising the risk of an escalation of conflict in the region. The Pentagon, citing a senior U.S. defense official, announced that American and coalition forces have been targeted at least 23 times in Iraq and Syria from October 17 to November 1. Since the onset of Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, attacks on American forces have increased. Iraqi armed groups aligned with the Islamic Republic have threatened to act against U.S. interests if Washington intervenes to support Israel against Hamas in Gaza. The U.S., European Union, and Japan have designated the Hamas militia, which is supported by the Islamic Republic, as a terrorist group. A group called 'Islamic Resistance in Iraq' expressed support for Tuesday's attack. This same group claimed responsibility for firing four Katyusha rockets at Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq on Monday. Following U.S. warnings to the Islamic Republic regarding involvement in the Israel-Hamas war, Amir-Abdollahian, the Islamic Republic's foreign minister, claimed that this government does not have proxy groups in the region. The use of Iranian-made weapons by militia groups in various parts of the Middle East has been reported multiple times. The Israeli army reported the death of another senior Hamas commander, while Netanyahu described the current war as a 'clash of civilizations' and labeled the Islamic Republic and Hamas as the 'axis of terror.'
