Alexei Navalny: Putin's Government Will Eventually Collapse

Alexei Navalny, the most prominent opposition politician in Russia, predicted on Wednesday, January 17, that Vladimir Putin's government, along with the elites that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union, will eventually fall apart. Navalny, 47, a former lawyer who gained fame about a decade ago by protesting widespread corruption in Russia, is currently imprisoned in a facility about 60 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. In a post on a social media platform managed by his supporters, he described the ruling elites in Russia as 'malicious, power-hungry, and deceitful' and noted that polygamists have become conservative; former Communist Party members have turned into staunch Christians, and holders of 'golden passports' and foreign bank account owners have emerged as aggressive patriots. Navalny emphasized the dominance of 'lies' in Russia, asserting that 'this system will collapse and disappear.' He added, 'Putin's government is not permanent. One day we will look back at where it is, and he will no longer be there.' Navalny, who has been sentenced to remain in prison until the age of 74, has repeatedly stated that Putin's Russia is run by 'thieves and criminals' and will one day be shaken and changed by revolution. Reuters reported that since Vladimir Putin came to power on the last day of 1999, his opponents have predicted his political downfall several times, each time being wrong. Russian officials dismiss Navalny's criticisms as meaningless, claiming he and his supporters are extremists, connected to the CIA, and aim to create discord in Russia. In 2021, tests in Western laboratories showed that Alexei Navalny was poisoned in Siberia with Novichok, a nerve agent, but he voluntarily returned to Russia from Germany, earning admiration from scattered opponents of the Russian government. Upon his return, he was arrested and tried, leading to his imprisonment. During this time, his communication was cut off for two weeks, raising concerns among his supporters about his disappearance in Russian prisons. Eventually, it was revealed that he was transferred to one of Russia's worst prisons, known as 'Polar Wolf' in the Arctic, used for exiling and isolating prisoners. Navalny stated that other inmates have repeatedly asked him, 'Why did you come back?' and suspect he is part of a Kremlin secret plot. He emphasized that 'pessimism and conspiracy' have permeated Russia to the extent that people no longer believe in simple motives. Navalny explained his return to Russia by saying, 'I have my country and my beliefs, and I do not want to abandon either my country or my beliefs or betray either of them.' He stressed that 'if your beliefs are valuable, you must be prepared to defend them and, if necessary, sacrifice for them.'
