Ali Khamenei Describes Current Era as 'Era of Dignity for the Islamic Republic'

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, stated that the current era is an 'era of dignity for the Islamic Republic' and asserted that 'the power of the Islamic system will increase day by day.' Speaking on Sunday, April 8, in front of senior military commanders, Khamenei also remarked that 'the unprecedented attacks against the Islamic system are due to the increasing power of this system.' Without providing details, instances, or the source of these 'current attacks,' Khamenei said, 'Enemies have felt a severe threat from this increasing power and have intensified their assaults.' The statements from the leader of the Islamic Republic come two months after protests in December that spread to over a hundred cities in Iran and resulted in at least 25 deaths. The slogans of the protesters, initially focused on economic issues, quickly shifted to harsh criticisms against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the domestic and foreign policies of the Islamic Republic, with demonstrators calling for the leader's resignation. In his Nowruz message this year, Khamenei referred to these protests as a 'bitter event.' On the same day as Khamenei's speech, the price of the dollar in the Iranian free market experienced an unprecedented surge, increasing by over 500 tomans within a few hours. However, Hesamoddin Ashna, an advisor to the Iranian president, labeled this sudden increase as 'crisis-making' against the government. In recent weeks, there has also been an increase in warning letters from political activists regarding the current dangerous situation in Iran. On one hand, 300 supporters of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wrote a letter to the leader of the Islamic Republic stating that the Iranian people are dissatisfied with the current state of the country and that 'fundamental and revolutionary reforms' must take place in the Islamic Republic. Abolfazl Ghadiani, a senior member of the Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution Organization, compared Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda, stating that he 'thought that the bigger the lie, the truer it becomes.' The 'Freedom Movement of Iran' also issued a statement on the occasion of the New Year, warning of the 'danger of political and social collapse' in Iran. Additionally, in recent weeks, officials from the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia have warned against 'Iran's destabilizing actions in the region,' and Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has addressed the issue of 'Iran's audacious behavior in the region and the threat of the Islamic Republic to regional stability' in his calls with Arab leaders. In recent weeks and months, Trump has repeatedly warned that if the Iran nuclear deal with world powers is not reformed, the U.S. will withdraw from the agreement. The U.S. government is expected to announce its position on the extension or non-extension of the suspension of sanctions against Iran by May 11 of this year. If Washington does not extend these sanctions, Iran will likely face U.S. economic penalties again, which could impact the fragile economic and political situation of the Islamic Republic.
